The EPOS community mourns the premature passing of Torild van Eck and Russ Evans

In Memoriam - Torild van Eck

In the early morning of the 30th of November, 2014, Torild van Eck, the secretary general of ORFEUS, passed away because of a heart attack. It is an immense loss for EPOS and the seismological community in Europe and beyond. Torild has been working in the field of seismology since digital acquisition became reality, in the 80’s and 90’s of last century and, for decades, he committed himself to serve the seismological community to make it achieve higher standards.

His experience and wisdom crossed seismology since the very start of EPOS helping to shape the early work, in the conception phase, and then the preparatory phase. He was deeply involved in the ongoing implementation phase.

He will be always remembered by those who had the opportunity to know him for his calm and determined character, his willingness and pragmatism to find always the most appropriate solutions to problems. We will all miss him, though what he taught us will be never forgotten.

In Memoriam – Russ Evans

On the 1st December 2014 BGS, the seismological community and EPOS lost a great friend, inspiration and scientist in Russ Evans. Russ passed away surrounded by his family after a brave battle with cancer. He was a key driver in the EPOS Preparatory Phase, his vision united many. His calm influence resolved many differences. Russ joined BGS in 1978 and in that time contributed greatly to geophysics and as mentor to many colleagues. He once said it was music or geophysics... and whilst music was a passion, in geophysics he found a career.
He was accomplished in many fields holding alongside a PhD in geophysics, an MBA in Business Administration and Advanced Diploma in Jazz Performance.
